What are you working for?

by Dina on July 6, 2010

Great big shout of gratitude to the nearly 100 wedding pros that joined me on my preview call, 3 Massive Mistakes Wedding Pros Make Negotiating.  It’s so gratifying to know that what Moshe and I shared about negotiating, and more importantly, valuing yourself will make a difference to so many people.  And, you said the nicest things after, which really moved me.

Here’s what  attendees said:

Today’s preview call was GREAT! You and Moshe offered great practical suggestions that I can implement right away.   Thanks so much! Brenna Taylor of An Elegant Affair

I can say unequivocally that those who take advantage of the knowledge and experience that Dina shares will have much more success than those who do not. Dina leads those who follow her down a path of not only more success in business, but more success in life.  Patricia Ambrosius of The Pragmatic Planner

3 Massive Mistakes Wedding Pros Make Negotiating Replay The special pre-launch sale offer in the call expires on the 7th and won’t be repeated ever.   Feel free to share the links with friends!

Getting Paid- the Psychic Kind

Really, thank you Brenna and Pat.  Your kind words are  psychic ‘pay day’ for me.Psychic pay is feeling good about what you do and how you do it.  When someone appreciate you, that’s the payday.

I remember reading a thread somewhere in which wedding planners were sharing their favorite moments of the wedding day.  Fluffing the bride’s training.  Seeing her at the end of the aisle with her dad.  Catching the couple’s first private moment after the ceremony.  Really heart-warming stuff. Definitely, a big pile of psychic pay.  However, too many wedding pros are satisfied with that alone.

It’s very special but psychic pay wont pay the bills.  And if you have to take on more and more brides to make ends meet, I wonder how much time you have to actually enjoy those moments which get fewer and farther apart?

Getting Paid- Cash  Money

The great thing about teaching is that teaching helps me remember the lesson, too.  On the call, I told the story of my first $20K engagement.

When I launched my first coaching practice I was a new divorcee  with two small kids who had left everything behind.  I desperately wanted them to have a home, their own home, to grow up in.  Happily, things were doing well; however, not well enough to cover the down payment and other associated costs.  I needed a big client so I went out and got one.  Then came the hard part- asking for the money. A lot of money.  I felt scared.  Exposed.  And, my pride was low.

How did I get the courage, chutpah actually, to ask a recognized global brand with thousands of employees to pay me, a solopro, the cost of a nice car for a few days of work- in advance?

What are you working for?

I remembered what I was working for. The experience of raising my children somewhere safe, warm, fun and all ours.  The delight of seeing them comfy and relaxed in their beds.  A place to make memories. The money made that experience possible.

Let me tell you something.  It’s an adage I’ve said for years and it’s as true today as it was 20 years ago.   It’s always about the money.  It’s never about the money.

Money is just a placeholder, like the chips on the poker table.  It  almost always represents something else.  Choices.  More options.  Peace of mind. Self-esteem.  Fun.  Money is invested with all kinds of emotions, fears and quirks.  With the right thoughts, you can choose to make money a positive, abundant force in your life. So, if you can’t ask your brides to pay what you deserve because you deserve it, motivate yourself by  knowing the story behind your money request.  What will that cash bring into your life and for whom?

Laugh if that seems too obvious, but deep down lots of you don’t or won’t embrace that idea.  Your money beliefs, your money fears, will keep you frustrated unless you work to change them.  Believe me, I know how tough that is.  And, I can tell you how light your heart will be when you get your money thinking aligned with your life goals.  Really.
