Monday Musings: Step in the Right Direction

Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase. ~ Martin Luther King

One of the joys of being in Savannah for the past few days, and there have been many, was attending the largest celebration for Dr. King.

The parade included the usual marching bands, more church groups than I’d ever seen, and quite a few organizations like All Walks of Life,  a Savannah-based group which empowers young people to achieve great things.  Those kids on the float were the embodiment of personal power, pride and purpose.  They really touched me because I haven’t always been the dynamo I am today.  I was just a kid who dreamed of more.

Isn’t it curious that some people seem to be able to rise above any circumstances to reach their goals?    What makes those folks different?  Somehow, I think discovering that secret or system or mindset can help me (and you) live a fuller, more authentic life.( I will admit I’m beginning to dislike the word authentic- so over used).   I want to continue to live my dreams and I want that for you, too.

So, I’ve studied the Secret by Rhonda Bynes.  Having read the book and seen the movie multiple times, I like the concept but feel it’s just too much wishful thinking.  You know, dreams without action.  I’m not discarding it; I still guard what info goes into my head and heart and keep positive thoughts about myself, my world and those in it.  But I’m not betting the farm on the Secret.

Through the TED Talks- a wonderous site where you can see 15 minute discussions on any topic- I discovered the growing field of positive psychology, which posits that there is a real, tangible impact of being happy that can be measured in business and life.  I like that.  If you haven’t already, please, please check out TED.  You won’t be disappointed.

Of course, I don’t have the answer to all life’s mysteries…yet.  But what I figured out so far, what I know is true is that faith is key.

For some that’s a religious belief, and that’s fine.  For me, faith is believing in something bigger than me that is friendly and good.  Einstein said the seminal question for each of us is: do you believe the universe is a friendly place? I think the universe is darned friendly and has a great sense of humor.  (how else do you explain the success of reality TV???)

Why mention this to you?  Our work- yours as a wedding pro and mine as a problem-solving coach- requires you and I to take our very best swing even when life throws curve balls.  We’re the ones others turn to when life seems impossibly difficult or complex.  We hold their hope.  And, the best way I know to do that honestly and consistently is to have faith even when I can’t see the top stair, or even the next one for that matter.  I know I’m here to do this work and the universe will provide a way for me.

Maybe this is about work.  Maybe it’s about the move to Savannah I’m considering, which feels both daunting and exhilarating at the same time.  Either way, having faith feels right.

What do you do to keep your faith in yourself and your work alive?
