Monday Musing: Keep an Eye Out

Dream your dreams with your eyes open and make them come true. ~  t.e. lawrence

Thank goodness Christmas is over so we can get to the the real celebration: New Year!  Besides September and the first day of school, for me nothing beats the excitement, anticipation and pure joy of starting a new year.  So much to plan for, so much to do!

Could be just me but I imagine the wedding community is chock full of optimists.  After all,  we help people plan for their best day and the start of their lives together.  We see life as a series of good things waiting to be discovered.  That’s why I love today’s quote. It’s all about dreaming with clear, open eyes.  Not wishing. Not hoping.  Dreaming AND doing.

So as the last days of 2009 dwindle to a precious few, why not stop to plan good things for your life and work for next year.  Chiefly, I’m encouraging you to:

Set specific number goals for business growth.  One of my coaching clients actual set a number of clients she’d like to help before the end of next year.  I love that because it makes things concrete and manageable.  Personally, I’m striving to speak at four wedding industry events, and I’m well on my way.  I was invited to speak at the regional ABC conference on July 18th. By year end, I plan to have over 100 professionals as part of my active community (it’s under development as we speak!)   How many more weddings do you want to book next year?

Set goals for your growth as a business person. No doubt you’re fab at the creative part of your wedding business.  How are you at the operations part?  That’s what I thought.  It’s not my favorite part either.  Strange enough, you have to understand business to run a business.  Find a way to grow competent in an area you now dread.

For me that’s the numbers like pricing and cash flow.  I’m committed to understanding the numbers of my business because if I don’t it’s really just a hobby, not a sustainable business.  I’m so serious about meeting this goal that I’m doing a bootcamp on pricing during the second season of calls- each quarter is a new season.    In case you didn’t see it, here’s the first season teleseminar schedule What are you going to study to be a better businessperson or manager?

Set goals for having fun. Yeah, I said fun.  You work incredibly hard and care deeply about your work.  Totally understandable.    I like that spunk.  But what fills you up otherwise?  I’ll admit to being a bit of a workaholic this year while launching Positively Wed.

Many of my favorite summer activities like the Wellfleet Oyster festival and Midnight Tango went by the wayside as I researched and planned.  I’m truly happy with how well it’s all going, but I missed days I can’t get back again.  So, next year I promise myself to see at least two dance productions (my fantasy career) and take a couple of trips.  My hubby and I are traveling to lovely Savannah in January to decide if we want to relocate there, so that’s one.  (And, hey if you live in Savannah, I’d love to do coffee while we’re there! Email meHow can you re-ignite your flame when it starts burning low?

Just so we can all be inspired, please share in the comments!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
