Dear Wedding Professional,

I know having ‘the contract talk’ with clients is nerve-wracking because I’ve run my own training business for the past 18 years. The rush to finish, praying there won’t be any stops to talk about touchy subjects like payment schedule.  As a former lawyer, I knew contracts were a necessary part of business life, but as a service professional  like you I felt like every contract negotiation was a chance to judge me and my business.

When there was an issue I thought my client would balk at I sometimes forgot to mention it, or raced through that part of the negotiation.  It was risky, I know.  I was so worried about what the client might say or if she’d back out.  Really, it was like I was at the mercy of my clients.

Over time, I mustered my courage and my company grew, however, I knew there had to be a better way to get contracts signed. So I started thinking about what I really wanted the negotiation/contracting experience to be like for my clients (because, honestly, they’re just as freaked out as you are) and for me.

My contract was based on boilerplate language I found somewhere.  It wasn’t really mine.  It had the right legal words, which is definitely important, but it didn’t express me.  That’s what made me so uncomfortable.  Maybe you got the contract for your wedding business contract from somewhere else, too, like your certificate program or the Internet. No shame in that.  It’s just time to take your business to another level.

Trust me, I was determined to make a system that was easy and worked. I sat down and thought about what I really wanted that process to look and feel like; to think about what was important to me (like cooperation and positivity) and what would help me give my clients exactly the outcome they wanted.

It became clear that the contract had to be meaningful to me and them, not just a list of paragraphs.  That the best way to ensure my clients were completely satisfied was to include them.  Because people do what they want to do- not what a contract tells them.
