A Rose By Another Name

by Dina on September 29, 2009

Fresh flowers are a secret treat of mine.  I love having them around.  There was a time when I got a new bouquet each week, but alas my hubby has forgotten.  Best I can do, besides hinting mercilessly,  is drool over the gorgeous creations I see in the wedding magazines.

Did you know in the Victorian age when social conventions were strict that flowers often ‘did the talking’ between couples.  Explaining the situation in blooms.  A combo of white and red tulips actually say, ‘Let’s take a chance. Believe me.’   Kinda romantic, huh?  Knowing the meaning of each blossom you include in your bouquets is a great way to personalize your wedding.  And, makes a great reminder of your feelings….especially when your honey remembers to bring home a nice treat.

Of course, big bold red roses say I love you.  What’s interesting is what the other poseys have to say.  How do you say perfect happiness?  With a pink rose, silly.   Read the list below to learn more of the language of  love, eh flowers.

  • Calla Lilly: beauty
  • Delphinimum: open heart and deep attachment
  • Ivy: wedded love
  • Red Rose: I love you
  • Stephanotis: happiness in marriage
  • Blue Violet: faithfulness
  • Myrtle: love, Jewish symbol for marriage

Here are a few little known meanings that are odd, but good to know:

  • Peony: happy marriage and shame (the second favorite next to roses)
  • Yellow carnations: disappointment, rejection
  • Dandelions: faithfulness and happiness  (who knew this weed has so much going for it?)

What story are you trying to tell with your wedding flowers?
